Veterans Day

By Diane Forrest,

A few days ago I read an article about a 70 year old Veteran who was given an eviction notice if he displayed his American flag outside his home.  I couldn’t believe that in this country, a veteran, or anyone, would be punished for flying the American flag.  The manager of the complex had this to say: But Terry McDonald said rules are rules, and Edward Zivica is in clear violation of them.

"Landlord tenant law is very specific. If you're going to live in a situation where there are lots of other tenants, you need to follow the rules that are set up," McDonald said.
I can understand his reasoning up to a point, I mean you don’t want to display things that are inappropriate, or that will cause discomfort for other tenants, however, this is America, and he wanted to display the American flag.  As I read the comments left by other readers, nearly all of them shared my feelings as well as offered thanks to the Veteran for his years of service to our country.

My family is filled with members who have served in the armed services dating back to the Civil War and continuing through the present war.  I am just so full of pride for them and the sacrifices they made for our country.  President Woodrow Wilson felt the same.  In 1919 he proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day and had this to say:
"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."

In 1954 Congress changed the name from Armistice Day to Veteran's Day, and has been called that ever since.  The holiday is often celebrated by having a ravioli meal. This tradition dates back to the ending days of World War I when President Woodrow Wilson, aware that the returning soldiers would be longing for home cooked meals, invited 2,000 soldiers to the White House and helped his staff chefs cook them ravioli, which had just become a mainstay in mainstream American kitchens due to commercial canning.

Today is a day to give thanks to all the Veterans, they can be your family, friends neighbors or co-workers.  There was a happy ending to the story above.  The management company and the Veteran reached an agreement to allow him to fly his flag on a list of holidays he provided, and he agreed to only display it on those dates.
